Your Input; Retention of Space Professionals

December 21st, 2007   Filed Under opportunities, questions

As we move forward in developing the next version of the survey of new space professionals, I thought we might make use of this blog as a way to stimulate discussion and gather input from a broader audience, and in a way that is less schedule and location dependent than traditional meetings.

At the December 6 meeting, we brainstormed some ideas on what kind of questions could be asked in order to gather useful data to better understand what motivates space professionals, and more specifically what would motivate them to continue their space careers. We discussed some of the attributes of space enterprise that present challenges in motivating millennial generation space professionals as compared to most other industries. Things like long product design cycles, “rigid” work environments, bureaucracy, etc.

The topics that were identified at the meeting include the following:

I invite you to share your anecdotes, insights, or other thoughts by way of comments to this blog post. The purpose is to identify the most important issues to explore within the survey as pertains to the retention of new space professionals.

The NSPWG will be holding a meeting for anyone interested on Thursday, Dec 6, from 3-4pm at the Aerospace Corporation in El Segundo. (More details on the meeting location to follow, and we plan to follow the meeting with a less formal offsite gathering). This meeting will also have a call in number for those who can’t make it in person. The immediate objective of this meeting is to familiarize you with specific actives and opportunities, mostly related to the WIRED grant, relating to university outreach, college student mentoring, roundtable discussions for young professionals, etc.

If you would like to attend the meeting, send an RSVP by email to teresa.henderson@csewi.org.

How to participate in NSPWG

If you were able to attend the CSA Transforming Space conference last week, or the New Space Professionals reception, we hope you had a great time. It was good to meet many of you in person, and for those of you not able to attend, we look forward to meeting you soon.

We would like to extend to all of you the opportunity to participate in the New Space Professionals Working Group (NSPWG) to help in providing the perspective of the young professionals in the space industry to the California Space Authority (CSA) and the broader California space enterprise community. If you would like to participate, please send an email to me at matt.everingham@californiaspaceauthority.org.
