(U.S. Department of Defense sensor image.) ![]() The Lockheed Martin-developed Homing Overlay Experiment vehicle launched from Kwajalein Missile Range 25 years ago, making history with the world’s first hit-to-kill intercept outside the atmosphere. (U.S. Army photo.) Since the 1980s, the technology débuted by the Homing Overlay Experiment has been proven in more than 40 successful intercept tests. Systems using hit-to-kill technology today include the U.S. Ground-based Midcourse Defense, the sea-based Aegis Ballistic Missile Defense, the Terminal High Altitude Area Defense, and the Patriot Advanced Capability-3 Missile, as well as the Medium Extended Air Defense System being developed by the United States, Germany and Italy.
