The Assembly Committee on Jobs, Economic Development and the Economy (JEDE) will be holding an informational hearing to discuss the continuation of incentives offered for targeted economic development and hirings within an enterprise zone. Legislation introduced during the past session, AB 1139, would have revised the definition of qualified employee and altered the incentives offered to businesses for these hirings. This hearing will more thoroughly discuss this concern. Hands-on Astronomy and Earth-Science Education Workshops for Grade 4-12 Teachers
A weekend of hands-on workshops and informative science talks will be offered as part of the 120th anniversary meeting of the nonprofit Astronomical Society of the Pacific. These workshops will take place Sept. 12-13, 2009, at the Westin Hotel near the San Francisco Airport in Millbrae, Calif.
The program will include space science and earth science workshops for educators of grades 4 through 12, as well as sessions for educators who work in informal settings (such as museums, nature centers, amateur astronomy clubs, and community organizations.)
No background in astronomy will be assumed or required. Experienced educators from the Society's staff, from NASA and NSF-sponsored projects, and from educational institutions around the country will be prese nting. Only a limited number of spaces will be available, and, thanks to conference supporters, registration for each day of the workshop will be only $39.
Sunday afternoon will feature a special nontechnical lecture series about the search for life among the stars, with some of the leading scientists from the SETI Institute describing the scientific experiments now under way to identify life beyond Earth.
Thanks to the support of the Spitzer Space Telescope Science Center, a limited number of travel-support scholarships (of up to $300 per person) will be made available for educators.

Orbiting Carbon Observatory (OCO)
This educational program is geared to K-16 educators and administrators and will provide a general introduction to the specific NASA/NOAA missions. Quality K-12 Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM) education workshops and NASA and NOAA scientist/engineer presentations of the science behind the satellite instruments along with rocket launch viewing opportunity (icing on the cake, not guaranteed to go even up to launch day) are provided. All K-12 educators will be provided exciting learning opportunities as well as a teacher’s guide, a classroom poster and mission CD for classroom use.
Application Deadline: February 13, 2009. OCO will provide space-based observations of atmospheric carbon dioxide and will improve our understanding of the natural processes and human activities that regulate the distribution of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere. NOAA-N Prime National Polar-orbiting Operation Environmental Satellite System (NPOESS)
This educational program is geared to K-16 educators and administrators and will provide a general introduction to the specific NASA/NOAA missions. Quality K-12 Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM) education workshops and NASA and NOAA scientist/engineer presentations of the science behind the satellite instruments along with rocket launch viewing opportunity (icing on the cake, not guaranteed to go even up to launch day) are provided. All K-12 educators will be provided exciting learning opportunities as well as a teacher’s guide, a classroom poster and mission CD for classroom use.
Application Deadline is January 23, 2009. NPOESS will provide data about the Earth's weather, atmosphere, oceans, land and near-space environment. Participating educators are invited to watch the launch and learn about real-world Earth, atmospheric and rocket science, and NPOESS’s satellite instrument technology.Sign-up deadline is coming up soon for both conferences so please register by mail or fax in your application.
